About this property
The building is a listed property and was originally a Woolcombers house built in the late 18th century owned by Thomas William. It later became a Quaker School known as the Isaac Brown Academy and many of our eminent 19th century scientists were educated here. The most famous of these was Joseph Lister, who pioneered germ free operations and became known as the father of antiseptics. The school was partially burnt down in a fire in 1845 and was subsequently then rebuilt and a top floor was added around this time. The frontage has remained unchanged from that period and is a fine example of early Victorian architecture. The house was renamed Scott House in 1887 until it became the Lord Lister Hotel in 1930.
The cellars though not in use are very old, there is reputed to originally have been a tunnel across to the nearby Priory. As is the speculated case around much of Hitchin. This refurbished hotel with free Wi-Fi was built in the late 18th century. It is located on the edge of the medieval market town of Hitchin.
The charming family-run hotel has modern comforts, a cosy bar overlooking the garden and a residents TV lounge.
Walk along the Hitchin’s old cobbled streets to explore the fine Tudor and Georgian buildings as well as the range of shops, restaurants, cafes, pub and theatres. The laundry service is off site and subject to charges, details of which can be found in the rooms.
The photocopying and fax service is also subject to an additional charge.
Please note there is a height restriction of 2.1 metres for the free car park. Alternative parking is available outside on the road from 17:00 – 10:00.
Please note parking is limited to one space per room and functions on a first-come-first-serve basis.
